They are much more frequent in women than in men and are often caused by rapid and sudden weight gain or loss. They appear as thin white or reddish-purple streaks, often grouped in twos or threes, and are most commonly found on the hips, thighs, breasts, abdomen, and gluteals in women, and on the back, gluteals, and abdomen in men. Stretch marks on the abdomen are also particularly common during pregnancy.

What Are Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks are the result of the rupture of dermal fibers caused by a loss of skin elasticity. The skin is unable to adapt to the sudden change in size of the affected area and undergoes structural damage. Their development progresses through different stages: in the initial inflammatory phase, the collagen-producing cells are subjected to excessive stress and the patient may experience mild itching. In the second phase, these cells continue producing collagen, but the fibers begin to break, leading to the appearance of reddish streaks. Over time, the fiber ruptures heal and the streaks gradually become whitish, taking on the appearance typical of scars.

What Is the Right Treatment for Stretch Marks?

To date, there is no definitive treatment capable of completely eliminating stretch marks, but over the years several therapies have been developed to improve their appearance. At the Dermacademy Institute, we have chosen to intervene with a combination of different treatment technologies capable of restoring the skin’s original thickness in a short time, stimulating collagen production, and improving the texture of the epidermal tissue. In this way, the visual difference between the stretch marks and the surrounding skin becomes less noticeable, improving the overall appearance of the treated area.

When Should Stretch Marks Be Treated?

The success of stretch mark treatment is closely related to the timing of intervention: starting therapy while the stretch marks are still in the early stage provides a much greater chance of success. For this reason, it is important to consult a specialist as soon as the first symptoms appear. Treating stretch marks after they have already turned white reduces the physician’s ability to intervene effectively and generally leads to less satisfactory results for the patient.

How Can Stretch Marks Be Prevented?

Because stretch marks are very difficult to eliminate, prevention is strongly recommended. Regularly monitoring body weight through a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle, avoiding sudden fluctuations, is the first step in preventing their appearance. Keeping the skin hydrated and well cared for, occasionally using exfoliating products that allow nutrients to penetrate deeper into the dermal tissue, helps maintain elasticity and makes the appearance of stretch marks less likely. The use of sunscreen during sun exposure is also essential: photoaging is one of the main causes of loss of skin elasticity. Smoking should also be avoided, as it has been shown to reduce skin elasticity and promote the development of stretch marks. During pregnancy, one of the periods in which stretch marks most frequently appear, it is important to control weight and apply moisturizing and nourishing products daily, such as almond oil or shea butter.

Conclusion

Stretch marks do not negatively affect the patient’s health, but they are an aesthetic concern that can cause significant psychological discomfort, especially during the summer season. Preventing and, when necessary, treating them is therefore essential to restoring confidence and improving the relationship with one’s body. The treatments are minimally invasive and performed in an outpatient setting without the use of anesthesia. We therefore invite you to book a consultation with us to evaluate a personalized treatment plan and regain confidence in showing your body with pride.

Le smagliature sono tra i più comuni e conosciuti inestetismi della pelle.
