Dermatitis
Understanding and Successfully Managing Them
Dermatitis encompasses a broad range of inflammatory skin conditions that can affect people of all ages, causing both aesthetic discomfort and physical irritation. These are among the most frequently diagnosed disorders at our institute: whether it is atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, or seborrheic dermatitis, our team of specialists will identify the most suitable treatment for each patient.
The causes of dermatitis vary depending on the specific type. Some forms have a strong hereditary component, while others are linked to external agents or environmental factors. The main causes include:
- Genetic factors: as in the case of atopic dermatitis, which may appear from the first months of life.
- Contact with irritating substances: detergents, cosmetics, or materials such as latex are often responsible for contact dermatitis.
- Stress: one of the triggering factors of stress-related dermatitis, which tends to worsen during periods of emotional tension.
- Sweating: in areas subject to friction, it may encourage the development of sweat dermatitis.
- Environmental factors: seasonal changes or sun exposure, as in the case of solar dermatitis.
Most Common Types of Dermatitis
Atopic Dermatitis
Atopic dermatitis, also known as atopic eczema, presents with redness, itching, dry skin, and red patches with small blisters, mainly affecting children and only rarely adults. It commonly involves the hands, feet, elbows, knees, face, neck, chest, wrists, and ankles. Although the exact causes are not fully understood, a hereditary component is believed to make the skin more reactive, with factors such as stress and seasonal changes worsening the condition. The areas most frequently affected include the face, neck, hands, feet, and the folds of the limbs.
Seborrheic Dermatitis
Seborrheic dermatitis is an intermittent inflammatory condition that affects the scalp and face, causing redness, itching, and scaling, often during seasonal changes. The main symptoms include dandruff and crust formation. It typically appears within the first 3 months of life or between the ages of 30 and 70, and when it occurs in children, it may reappear in adulthood.
Contact Dermatitis
Contact dermatitis is a skin inflammation caused by contact with chemical or natural substances, such as detergents or plants, which may be acidic, alkaline, or caustic. It initially presents with itching, followed by blisters, redness, scaling, erosions, and crusts. There are two main types: irritant dermatitis, which appears immediately and tends to be more painful, and allergic dermatitis, which develops after prolonged exposure.
Prevention of Dermatitis
Preventing dermatitis requires attention to daily habits:
- Avoid irritating substances: wear gloves when using detergents or chemical products.
- Moisturize the skin regularly: to prevent dryness, especially in cases of atopic eczema.
- Use gentle cleansers: avoiding aggressive products that may alter the skin’s hydrolipidic film.
- Choose appropriate clothing: avoid synthetic fabrics and prefer breathable materials.
In the case of atopic dermatitis, controlled sun exposure may help improve symptoms, provided it takes place under the supervision of a specialist.
The treatment of dermatitis varies according to the cause and severity of the symptoms. At the Dermacademy Institute, every therapeutic pathway begins with a thorough diagnosis to identify the nature of the condition and personalize the treatment.
Available therapies include:
- Topical therapies: anti-inflammatory or moisturizing creams and ointments to relieve symptoms.
- Systemic therapies: for more severe or recurrent cases.
- Innovative approaches: for complex conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp or atopic eczema.
