Skin biopsy

Skin Diagnosis in Complete Safety

A skin biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure that plays a fundamental role in the accurate diagnosis of numerous dermatological conditions. It consists of removing a small fragment of skin containing a lesion in order to analyze its structure and cellular characteristics. This examination makes it possible to distinguish inflammatory conditions, such as atopic dermatitis or other forms of dermatitis, from more serious conditions, including skin tumors.

Skin biopsy at the Dermacademy Institute is performed in a safe and controlled environment within a fully equipped surgical outpatient clinic. The procedure is carried out under local anesthesia, ensuring maximum patient comfort. The process includes:

  1. Local anesthesia: before the sample is taken, a small injection of anesthetic is administered to numb the area where the biopsy will be performed.
  2. Skin punch biopsy: a cylindrical scalpel called a punch is used to collect a small skin sample (approximately 3 mm in diameter). This small “skin specimen” is sufficient for analysis and often does not require stitches due to the limited size of the sample.
  3. Incisional biopsy: in cases where a larger sample is needed, such as for deep or extensive lesions, an incisional skin biopsy may be performed, also removing a small portion of subcutaneous tissue.

Once collected, the sample is placed in a test tube and sent to the pathologist for a detailed microscopic examination, which allows the nature of the cells to be determined and an accurate diagnosis to be established.

The analysis of the skin sample makes it possible to identify various conditions, including:

  • Chronic dermatitis: a skin biopsy for dermatitis is useful in confirming diagnoses of atopic dermatitis or other chronic forms of dermatitis, distinguishing them from other inflammatory skin conditions.
  • Psoriasis: the biopsy is able to reveal specific cellular characteristics of psoriasis, differentiating it from other diseases with similar symptoms.
  • Tumoral lesions: it allows the identification or exclusion of skin tumors, such as melanomas and carcinomas, through microscopic analysis of the cells.
  • Skin spots or growths: in the case of suspicious or irregular spots, the biopsy may reveal the presence of abnormal melanocytes or other cellular alterations indicative of tumors or benign conditions.

A skin biopsy is therefore a fundamental diagnostic tool that provides an accurate understanding of skin conditions and allows therapy to be personalized according to the histological diagnosis.

The skin biopsy procedure is quick and generally takes between 10 and 20 minutes. After the anesthetic injection and sample collection, the treated area is dressed, and the patient can immediately resume normal activities, avoiding only getting the area wet or subjecting it to friction for the first few hours.

Complete healing usually occurs within a few days without leaving noticeable scars, and the sample is sent to the laboratory for analysis, with results typically available within a few days.

Skin biopsy is recommended in several clinical circumstances to ensure an accurate diagnosis. The main indications include:

  • Atopic dermatitis and other forms of dermatitis: when dermatitis presents persistent symptoms or does not respond to treatments, a skin biopsy for dermatitis is useful to confirm the diagnosis and guide therapy.
  • Psoriasis: for the diagnosis of psoriasis, especially in treatment-resistant forms, the biopsy provides confirmation of the condition and allows it to be distinguished from other chronic inflammatory diseases.
  • Suspicious spots or skin growths: in the presence of abnormal spots, a skin biopsy is essential to rule out the presence of tumor cells and promptly treat any underlying conditions.
  • Skin growths and chronic lesions: lesions that do not heal spontaneously or recur over time often require a biopsy for a more in-depth diagnosis.

A skin biopsy is therefore an essential examination for accurately diagnosing various skin conditions, providing a clear understanding of the nature of the lesion and facilitating the initiation of appropriate treatments.
